Pattern 1821 East India Company Light Cavalry Sowars sword, 1840 circa (metal)

5920536 Pattern 1821 East India Company Light Cavalry Sowars sword, 1840 circa (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1821 East India Company Light Cavalry sowars sword, 1840 circa.
The patterns of swords issued to sowars of the East India Companys armies are poorly documented but, in general, their hilts followed the chronological progression of British cavalry patterns. This sword has the mark of the Companys Senior Examiner, 1840 circa.
The sword has the pipe backed, or rounded backed blade normally associated with the officers Pattern 1821 sword. It appears that the pipe back was popular in India and remained in service there much longer than in the British Army.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of a Pattern 1821 East India Company Light Cavalry Sowars sword, dating back to around 1840. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this remarkable piece is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The intricate design of this sword reflects its historical significance within the East India Company's armies. While documentation on these swords is scarce, it is believed that their hilts followed the evolution of British cavalry patterns over time. Notably, this particular sword bears the mark of the Companys Senior Examiner from around 1840. What sets this sword apart is its pipe-backed blade, which was typically associated with officers' Pattern 1821 swords. Interestingly, it seems that this unique feature remained popular in India and continued to be used there long after it fell out of favor in the British Army. Through this photo print, we are transported into a world where cavalry troops wielded these magnificent weapons as symbols of power and authority. The attention to detail and fine craftsmanship evident in every curve and embellishment serve as a testament to both artistic skill and military prowess. As we admire this historic artifact captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, let us appreciate not only its beauty but also its role in shaping history within both military and cultural contexts.
