EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an exquisite armchair from the 17th century, known as the Armchair, c. 1625. Crafted with oak by the Welsh school, this remarkable piece of furniture measures 142.8x67x56.6 cm and is currently housed in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, Scotland. The chair's design reflects a joined panel-back style, featuring a large sunburst-carved lunette cresting adorned with scrolled edging at its peak. The backrest consists of two horizontal panels and rails intricately incised with lunettes, rosettes, and an arch motif. What truly sets this armchair apart are its unique armrests surmounted by secondary structures fashioned as naive figures. These figures are supported at the rear by a short rail while resting on baluster-turned supports. The seat itself is constructed from two planks raised on rails embellished with lunettes and is supported by turned front legs connected by plain stretchers. The legs extend gracefully to form feet that complete the overall aesthetic of this stunning piece. Gifted to the City of Glasgow in 1944 by Sir William and Lady Burrell, this wooden masterpiece represents baroque influences combined with Jacobean woodcarving techniques prevalent during that era. Through this print captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we can appreciate not only the craftsmanship but also glimpse into history through one of Wales' finest examples of furniture artistry from centuries past.
