Trench map, Meaulte, belonging to Captain Siegfried Sassoon (map, trench)

5929109 Trench map, Meaulte, belonging to Captain Siegfried Sassoon (map, trench) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Trench map, Meaulte, 62D NE2, edition 2B, belonging to Captain Siegfried Sassoon.
Sassoon is best remembered now as a soldier-poet who protested against war. To his men he was known as A Mad JackA for his recklessly brave exploits on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918). He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for bringing back a wounded Lance-Corporal under heavy fire, and was recommended for the Victoria Cross (VC) for capturing a German trench single-handed. In some ways, at the beginning of the War, Sassoon was a typical officer - a young gentleman, keen on sports and dabbling with poetry, he volunteered for service before war was even declared. But his experiences and the death of a close friend changed his mind. His brave exploits became suicidal.
While recovering from a wound, he threw his MC into the Mersey, and wrote a very public letter to A The TimesA condemning the fact that the War was A being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end itA. He was sent to a hospital for shell-shock sufferers, but guilty about leaving his men, Sassoon eventually returned to the front. He was wounded again in 1918, but survived the War.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a trench map belonging to the renowned Captain Siegfried Sassoon. The map, titled "Trench Map, Meaulte" offers a glimpse into the challenging and perilous conditions faced by soldiers during World War One. Captain Siegfried Sassoon is best remembered as a soldier-poet who bravely protested against war. His reckless bravery on the Western Front earned him the nickname "A Mad Jack" among his men. Despite being initially enthusiastic about serving in the war, Sassoon's perspective changed after experiencing loss and witnessing its devastating effects firsthand. Sassoon's courageous acts included bringing back a wounded Lance-Corporal under heavy fire, for which he was awarded the Military Cross (MC). He was also recommended for the Victoria Cross (VC) after single-handedly capturing a German trench. However, these brave exploits were often seen as suicidal due to their extreme nature. During his recovery from an injury, Sassoon threw away his MC into the Mersey River and publicly condemned those prolonging the war in a letter to The Times newspaper. Overwhelmed with guilt about leaving his comrades behind, he eventually returned to battle despite suffering from shell-shock. Although wounded again in 1918, Captain Siegfried Sassoon survived World War One and left behind an extraordinary collection of papers that provide valuable insights into this tumultuous period of history. This print serves as both a tribute to his remarkable courage and an important historical artifact preserved at London's National Army Museum through Bridgeman Images' efforts.
