EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving titled "The little black, white and red Indian Creeper" transports us back to the 18th century, showcasing the intricate beauty of nature through art. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a fusion of two renowned works in natural history. Originally featured in Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History, this particular piece combines elements from Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. Seligmann skillfully translated names into German while adding his own touch with additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The image itself depicts a stunning bird known as Certhia minor ex albo nigro et rubro varia or simply "Indian Creeper". Its striking combination of black, white, and red plumage captures our attention immediately. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke; we can almost feel the texture of its feathers come alive on paper. As we admire this exquisite engraving from a private collection now made accessible through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, we are reminded once again that art has the power to transport us across time and space. This print serves as a testament to both nature's wonders and human creativity – an everlasting celebration of birds, animals, natural history, and the delicate artistry found within their existence.
