Coloured lithograph from The Campaign in India 1857-58, a series of 26 coloured lithographs by William Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-1858.
This lithograph depicts the advance of reinforcements from the Punjab bound for the besieged city of Delhi during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). The force, under the command of Brigadier-General John Nicholson, included a siege train of 32 guns and 2, 000 men. The vast majority of the reinforcements were Indian and without their help the weak British forces besieging Delhi from the nearby ridge would never have been able to take the city in September 1857.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Reinforcement proceeding to Delhi, 1857" takes us back in time to the tumultuous period of the Indian Mutiny. Created by George Francklin Atkinson and published by Day and Son in 1857-1858, this print is part of a series that vividly depicts significant events from The Campaign in India. In this particular scene, we witness the advance of reinforcements from Punjab towards the besieged city of Delhi. Led by Brigadier-General John Nicholson, this force includes a formidable siege train consisting of 32 guns and 2,000 men. However, what truly stands out is the crucial role played by Indian soldiers who made up the majority of these reinforcements. The lithograph showcases an array of elements that transport us into this historical moment. From camels carrying supplies to dhoolies used for transporting wounded soldiers through scorching hot weather conditions - every detail adds depth and authenticity to the image. It is important to note that without the assistance provided by these brave Indian soldiers during this critical phase of battle against mutinous forces, it would have been nearly impossible for British troops stationed on nearby ridges to successfully capture Delhi in September 1857. This remarkable print not only captures a pivotal event but also serves as a testament to the resilience and collaboration between British and Indian forces during one of India's most challenging periods.
