EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the main entrance of Purana Qila in Delhi, captured in 1823 by the talented artist Robert Smith. Painted with oil on canvas, this artwork measures 81.9x107.3 cm and is currently housed at the Yale Center for British Art as part of the esteemed Paul Mellon Collection. The image transports us back to a time when this historic site was bustling with life and grandeur. The remains seen here date back to various periods including Gupta, Rajput, and Delhi Sultanate eras. Notably, it was Emperor Humayun who chose this location to build his new city of Dinpanah before it was demolished by Afghan Sher Shah in 1540. It is Sher Shah's fort that stands tall today. As we gaze upon this stunning architectural marvel, we are reminded of its rich history and significance in Indian culture. The intricate arches and arcades depicted in the painting showcase exquisite craftsmanship from the 16th century. Although time has taken its toll on these ruins, they continue to exude an aura of strength and resilience that captivates all who behold them. This photograph serves as a testament to India's glorious past while also highlighting the enduring beauty found within its historical landmarks.
