Calvary with a Carthusian Monk, 1389-1395. Creator: Jean de Beaumetz (French, c. 1335-1396)
Calvary with a Carthusian Monk, 1389-1395. Jean de Beaumetz became the official court painter to the Burgundian duke, Philip the Bold, in 1376. Between 1389 and 1395 he created devotional paintings for the monks cells at the Chartreuse de Champmol, the monastery founded by Philip and his wife Margaret to house the ducal tombs. This panel, originally one of 26, is only one of two that have survived; the second is preserved in the Louvre in Paris. The Carthusians were intensely devoted to the Passion of Christ; particularly bloody images of the Crucifixion often decorated their cells. Isolated from one another, the monks contemplated the sacrifice of Christ (emphasized here by the presence of a Carthusian monk at the foot of the cross) creating an empathetic connection with the suffering of the Virgin who faints in the arms of the two Marys. Saint John the Evangelist, on the right, bows his head in sorrow. The punched decoration in the gold background represents the Trees of Life and Knowledge, emphasizing the biblical connection between Adam and Christ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Jean de Beaumetz, a renowned French painter from the 14th century. Titled "Calvary with a Carthusian Monk" this piece was created between 1389 and 1395 as part of a series commissioned for the Chartreuse de Champmol monastery. The painting depicts the crucifixion of Christ, with a unique focus on the presence of a Carthusian monk at the foot of the cross. The Carthusians, known for their intense devotion to Christ's Passion, often adorned their cells with graphic depictions of his sacrifice. This particular panel is one of only two surviving pieces from its original set. At first glance, one cannot help but be drawn to the scene's emotional intensity. The Virgin Mary faints in anguish while being supported by two grieving Marys. Saint John the Evangelist bows his head in sorrow beside them, adding to the overall sense of grief and empathy. The gold background features intricate punched decorations representing Trees of Life and Knowledge, symbolizing Adam's connection to Christ through biblical references. Jean de Beaumetz's talent shines through in every brushstroke, capturing both raw emotion and religious symbolism within this powerful image. As we gaze upon this rare glimpse into medieval artistry, we are reminded not only of its historical significance but also its ability to evoke deep contemplation and spiritual reflection even today.
