A Chlorine Gas Attack, Second Battle of Ypres, Belgium, 1915, (1926). On 22 April 1915 the Germans released 168 tons of chlorine gas over a four mile front, in the first gas attack of the war. Initially French and Algerian troops (Zouaves) of the 45th and 78th Divisions were attacked with the gas, inflicting heavy casualties and causing widespread panic, with the survivors abandoning their positions. Although the Allies initially condemned the attack as barbaric, by the end of the war both sides had made extensive use of poison gas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print by Lucien Jonas captures the horrifying reality of a chlorine gas attack during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. The image transports us back to that fateful day when the Germans unleashed 168 tons of deadly gas over a four-mile front, forever changing the face of warfare. In this haunting scene, we witness French and Algerian troops, known as Zouaves, falling victim to the toxic cloud. The chaos and panic are palpable as soldiers flee their positions, desperate to escape from the suffocating grasp of this new form of chemical warfare. The casualties are heavy, leaving behind a trail of devastation and despair. Initially condemned as barbaric by the Allies, it is tragic that both sides eventually resorted to using poison gas throughout World War I. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of the horrors endured by those on all fronts during this brutal conflict. Lucien Jonas's artistic talent shines through in his monochrome depiction. Through careful attention to detail and composition, he captures not only the physical toll but also conveys emotions such as terror and helplessness experienced by these brave men. As we reflect upon this historical moment frozen in time, let us remember those who suffered and sacrificed their lives during one of humanity's darkest chapters. May their memory serve as a solemn reminder for future generations about the devastating consequences brought about by war and its weapons.
