The Conversion of Saul with Horseman and Banner, c. 1645-1647. Creator: Jacob Jordaens (Flemish
The Conversion of Saul with Horseman and Banner, c. 1645-1647. According to the Bible, in the year following the death of Jesus Christ, Saul of Tarsus (who became Saint Paul) was on the road to Damascus. He was suddenly surrounded by a brilliant light from above, heard the voice of Christ, and became a believer. In this work and in The Conversion of Saul with Christ and the Cross, shown nearby, Jordaens illustrated the climactic moment as Jesus speaks and Saul lies on the ground. The works are studies for a painting of the same subject, an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Paul in the abbey church at Tongerlo, near Antwerp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jacob Jordaens' masterpiece, "The Conversion of Saul with Horseman and Banner" created between 1645-1647. Inspired by the biblical account, Jordaens depicts the pivotal moment when Saul of Tarsus, later known as Saint Paul, experiences a divine revelation on his journey to Damascus. In this artwork and its companion piece, "The Conversion of Saul with Christ and the Cross". Jordaens skillfully captures the climactic scene where Jesus speaks from above while Saul lies humbled on the ground. These works served as studies for an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Paul in Tongerlo Abbey Church near Antwerp. Jordaens employs a variety of artistic techniques in this composition. The use of gouache, black and red chalk, pen and ink, brushwork with brown washes, watercolor accents heightened with white gouache creates a visually striking image. The framing lines drawn in red chalk and graphite add depth to the overall composition. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows viewers to appreciate Jordaens' mastery firsthand. It invites us into a momentous event that shaped Christian history—a transformative encounter between man and divinity captured through exquisite artistry.
