EDITORS COMMENTS
Daniel Dancer, Esq. - The Remarkable Miser, 1821". This print captures the enigmatic portrait of Daniel Dancer, a notorious English miser and eccentric from the late 18th century. Despite owning vast amounts of land and property, Dancer chose to live in tattered rags, embodying his reputation as an extraordinary character. Legend has it that he would warm his dinner by sitting upon it, showcasing his peculiar habits. Even more astonishingly, he met his demise naked inside a sack. To safeguard against thefts, Dancer devised an unconventional method of entering his own home – through an upper window using a ladder which he promptly drew up after him. The image is taken from "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation". Volume II by Henry Wilson. Published in London in 1821 by J. Robins & Co. , this engraving offers us a glimpse into the intriguing life of this eccentric individual. Dressed in shabby attire with a worn-out hat perched atop his head, Daniel Dancer's portrait reflects both mystery and intrigue. This monochrome depiction allows us to delve into the mind of a man who defied societal norms while amassing wealth behind closed doors. Through this remarkable photograph print, we are transported back to 19th-century Britain where unique characters like Daniel Dancer left an indelible mark on history.
