Egyptian Family (Sketch for The Battle of the Pyramids ), c. 1835. Creator
Egyptian Family (Sketch for " The Battle of the Pyramids" ), c. 1835. In 1810, Gros exhibited a massive painting of Napoleon at the 1798 Battle of the Pyramids, one of the rare French triumphs in the failed campaign to conquer Egypt (1789-1801). After Napoleon first fell from power in 1814, the painting went into storage, until the new king Louis-Philippe chose to resurrect it for a history museum in Paris. However, perhaps to diminish Napoleons significance, the government asked Gros to amplify the original with an addition at each end. This painting incorporates General Kleber, a famously successful military leader who had been excluded from the original painting

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print showcases a sketch of the "Egyptian Family (Sketch for The Battle of the Pyramids)" created by Antoine Jean Gros in 1835. This artwork is an important piece that reflects the historical context and artistic choices made during its creation. In 1810, Gros presented a grand painting depicting Napoleon's victory at the Battle of the Pyramids in 1798, which was part of France's unsuccessful attempt to conquer Egypt. After Napoleon's fall from power in 1814, this painting was stored away until King Louis-Philippe decided to bring it back to life for a history museum in Paris. However, with the intention of downplaying Napoleon's significance, Gros was commissioned to expand on his original work by adding General Kleber at each end. This particular painting captures not only a significant moment in French military history but also highlights Gros' skill as an artist. The use of oil on linen brings depth and texture to the artwork, enhancing its visual impact. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this print allows us to appreciate Heritage Art/Heritage Images' dedication to preserving and sharing cultural heritage. Through this photograph print, viewers can delve into both historical events and artistic techniques employed during that era. It serves as a reminder that art has always played a vital role in documenting and interpreting our shared pasts.
