French Renaissance ceiling painting, (1898). Creator: Unknown

French Renaissance ceiling painting, (1898). Figs 1 and 3: Painted ceilings of timbers in the Castle at Blois (Francois I), [16th century]. Figs 2 and 4: Painted binding-beams on the same ceilings. Fig 5: Painted span-ceiling in the Castle at Wideville (Louis XIII), [17th century]. Figs 6, 7 and 8: Painted binding-beams on the same ceiling...In this plate span-ceilings only are taken into consideration, the character of which is entirely preserved by the applied painting. Each single beam has a special painting, several of them together forming a pattern regularly repeated...The lateral faces of the beams have generally only one tone; the connecting beams however, are distinguished by a rich decoration on the sides and on the under face.... Plate 63 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning French Renaissance ceiling painting from 1898. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to the artwork. The photograph captures four different painted ceilings, two from the Castle at Blois during the 16th century and one from the Castle at Wideville during the 17th century. The focus of this plate is on span-ceilings, which are beautifully preserved through applied painting. Each individual beam boasts its own unique design, coming together to form a harmonious pattern that repeats throughout. While the lateral faces of the beams feature a single tone, it is on the connecting beams where intricate decorations adorn both sides and even underneath. This exquisite display of artistry and craftsmanship exemplifies French Renaissance interior decoration at its finest. The floral motifs and stylized patterns bring life and vibrancy to these architectural features within grand chateaus and stately homes. Plate 63 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring various artistic styles throughout history. This lithograph chromolithograph print was published by B. T. Batford in London in 1898, translated from Heinrich Dolmetsch's original German work. With its rich colors, ornate designs, and historical significance, this print offers viewers a glimpse into the opulence and beauty found within French Renaissance architecture.
