EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the daring attempt of Hubert Latham, a French aviator, to fly his Antoinette monoplane across the treacherous English Channel in 1909. As he leaves Sangatte near Calais, anticipation fills the air as onlookers watch with bated breath. The vibrant tricolour flag proudly flutters in the wind, symbolizing Latham's determination and national pride. However, halfway through his courageous journey, disaster strikes when Latham's engine fails. With no other choice but to make an emergency landing on water, he finds himself immersed in the cold depths of the channel. Thankfully, a French torpedo boat comes to his rescue just in time. Undeterred by this setback, Latham makes another valiant attempt at crossing the channel but is ultimately beaten to glory by Louis Bleriot. Nevertheless, this image immortalizes Latham as a pioneer and trailblazer in aviation history. The dramatic cliffs serve as a striking backdrop for this historic moment while smoke billows from nearby warships adding an element of intensity and danger to the scene. This photograph not only showcases early 20th-century aircraft technology but also highlights the risks these brave aviators took for their passion. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history captured by Hubert Latham himself or someone unknown behind him lens-wise; it serves as a testament to human courage and perseverance against all odds.
