Hut Point, Midnight, March 27th, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson
Hut Point, Midnight, March 27th, 1911, (1913). Watercolour painting. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour painting, titled "Hut Point, Midnight, March 27th, 1911" by Edward Wilson, transports us back to a significant moment in history. It depicts the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team as they embarked on their ambitious journey towards the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) was not just an adventure but a scientific endeavor led by Scott. Alongside him were experts from various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology and physics. Their goal was twofold: to continue the scientific research initiated during Scott's previous Antarctic expedition and to be the first humans to reach the geographic South Pole. On January 17th, 1912 - after enduring countless challenges - Scott and four companions including Dr Edward Wilson reached their long-awaited destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey homebound tragedy struck; Scott and his remaining team perished at the end of March. Eight months later their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries that chronicled their heroic struggle against nature's unforgiving forces. This evocative artwork captures both the beauty of Antarctica's frozen landscape under midnight skies while also serving as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of human exploration. It stands as a testament to bravery and resilience in one of Earth's most inhospitable regions.
