Loss of the Schooner "Archus", loaded with Silver-Lead Ore, on the Coast of Greenland, 1856....she put into the harbour of Kajarlik, a small opening in an island of Arksuk [Arsuk] Fiord. A gale of wind came on, blowing into the harbour; and this increased with such force that the ship's cables and hawsers were unable to hold her, and she was dashed with great violence against the rocks, knocking off her rudder, her false keel, and making her so leaky that she was obliged to be abandoned. The crew and miners worked all day, saving all the provisions and rigging, &c. they were able to get at, and landing them on the rocks. None of the cargo could be saved, but it was insured. The cold at this time was very severe...On the morning after abandoning her she was nowhere to be seen, and it is supposed she sunk at the entrance of the harbour'. This evocative image captures the moment of despair and loss as the schooner
EDITORS COMMENTS
Archus" is wrecked on the rocky coast of Greenland in 1856. The vessel, laden with valuable silver-lead ore, had sought refuge in the harbor of Kajarlik, a small inlet in Arsuk Fiord. But the tranquility was short-lived as a sudden gale tore through the harbor, shattering the "Archus" against the jagged shoreline. The crew and miners worked tirelessly to salvage what they could, managing to save provisions and rigging before abandoning ship. Tragically, all of the cargo was lost, but fortunately, it was insured. The severe cold added to the desperation, making the situation even more perilous. On the morning following the abandonment, the "Archus" was nowhere to be found, and it is believed that she sank at the entrance of the harbor. This haunting image serves as a reminder of the unforgiving nature of the sea and the risks that sailors faced during the 19th century in their quest for valuable resources." This photograph, taken from an unknown source, was first published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1856. The image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the sea was a primary means of transportation and exploration, and the dangers of the natural world were ever-present.
