Mount Erebus, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson
Mount Erebus, 1911, (1913). The sun lights up the summit of Mount Erebus, the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Watercolour drawing from Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mount Erebus, 1911" by Edward Wilson takes us back to the early 20th century and immerses us in the extraordinary Terra Nova Expedition. The image showcases the majestic Mount Erebus, its summit illuminated by the warm glow of sunlight. Standing as the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth, this natural wonder serves as a backdrop for an incredible tale of exploration. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this British Antarctic Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to conduct vital scientific research. Accompanying Scott were a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and fierce competition from Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's expedition party who had reached their goal first; Scott and his companions finally arrived at their long-awaited destination - only to find disappointment awaiting them. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from the pole; Scott along with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans succumbed to exhaustion and freezing temperatures at the end of March that same year. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This watercolor drawing featured in "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II (Smith, Elder & Co. , London-1913) captures both the beauty of Mount Erebus as well as serving as a somber reminder of these brave explorers' ultimate sacrifice for scientific progress.
