Simon Bolivar, 19th century South American revolutionary leader, (1901)
Simon Bolivar, 19th century South American revolutionary leader, (1901). Bolivar (1783-1830) is known as the Liberator of South America from Spanish rule. The son of a Venezuelan aristocrat he led a series of revolutions in Spanish-ruled South America, leading to the creation of the independent states of Colombia (1819), Venezuela (1821), Ecuador (1822), Peru (1824) and Bolivia (1825). He served as President of Colombia (1821-1830) and Peru (1823-1829). Bolivar envisaged the establishment of a league of Hispanic South American nations, but the countries he had liberated began to quarrel amongst themselves. Disillusioned, Bolivar left for Europe, but died on the journey. A print from The Worlds History, A Survey of Mans Record, by Dr HF Helmolt, Volume I, William Heinemann, London, 1901

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic image of Simon Bolivar, a 19th-century South American revolutionary leader. Taken in 1901, this portrait showcases Bolivar's commanding presence as he stands tall in his military uniform adorned with epaulettes. Bolivar, also known as the Liberator of South America from Spanish rule, played a pivotal role in the fight for independence across the continent. Born into Venezuelan aristocracy, he led a series of revolutions that resulted in the creation of independent states such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. During his presidency in Colombia and Peru, Bolivar had envisioned a league of Hispanic South American nations united against colonial powers. However, internal conflicts among these liberated countries left him disillusioned. Seeking solace or perhaps new strategies abroad, Bolivar embarked on a journey to Europe but tragically passed away during his travels. The significance of this photo lies not only in its portrayal of an influential historical figure but also in its representation of an era marked by rebellion and political upheaval. As we gaze upon this engraving from "The World's History" we are reminded of Bolivar's enduring legacy as a statesman and revolutionary who fought tirelessly for freedom on behalf of his people.
