Sir Isaac Newton, English mathematician, astronomer and physicist, (19th century). Artist: Freeman
Sir Isaac Newton, English mathematician, astronomer and physicist, (19th century). Newtons (1643-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Isaac Newton, a brilliant English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist from the 19th century. Created by Freeman, this artwork showcases Newton's profound impact on science and thought through his groundbreaking discoveries. Known for formulating the laws of gravity and motion in his monumental work "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" published in 1687, Newton's contributions to mathematics are immeasurable. Beyond his achievements in physics, he also delved into optics and light theory which led him to construct the first reflecting telescope. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 for his exceptional intellect, Newton found eternal rest at Westminster Abbey in London. In this portrait engraved by Sir Godfrey Kneller, we see a distinguished man with a wig symbolizing the fashion of that era. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this image as it transports us back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when great minds like Newton were shaping our understanding of the world. The print collector Freeman has masterfully captured both the intellectual prowess and enigmatic aura surrounding Sir Isaac Newton. This artwork serves as a powerful reminder of how one individual can revolutionize scientific knowledge while leaving an indelible mark on history.
