Tracks of the Terra Nova, 1910-1913, (1913)

Tracks of the Terra Nova, 1910-1913, (1913). Map showing routes of the SY (Sailing Yacht or Steam Yacht) Terra Nova which took supplies to expedition members, and transported them between research bases. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Tracks of the Terra Nova, 1910-1913" offers a glimpse into the historic British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The accompanying map showcases the routes taken by the SY Terra Nova, a sailing yacht that played a crucial role in supplying expedition members and transporting them between research bases. Departing from London on 1 June 1910, Scott's final expedition aimed to continue scientific work initiated during his previous Antarctic exploration. Alongside him were an impressive team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Their collective mission was twofold: to conduct groundbreaking scientific research and to become the first humans to reach the elusive geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival at the Pole on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and setbacks caused by blizzards and dwindling supplies; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already achieved this feat a month earlier. Tragically delayed by these unforeseen circumstances and facing insurmountable challenges ahead of them as they journeyed back towards safety; Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions at the end of March. The discovery of their bodies eight months later along with their poignant diaries provided invaluable insight into their heroic struggle for survival amidst nature's harshest elements. This profound photograph serves as both a testament to human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and an enduring tribute to those who sacrificed everything for scientific advancement in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments.
