EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure childhood joy on the Doddington Estate in Battersea, Wandsworth. A group of children can be seen gleefully playing on a climbing frame, their laughter echoing through the air. Behind them stand two towering blocks of flats, one standing at 10-storeys high and the other at an impressive 13-storeys. These architectural marvels were built using the innovative 12M Jespersen system by Laing for Wandsworth London Borough Council between 1967-71. The Doddington Estate, designed by architects Emberton, Tardrew & Partners, was a shining example of modernist architecture in the 1960s. The estate boasted not only these imposing tower blocks but also numerous other housing units that provided homes to many families. Constructed with prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels produced at Laing's concrete factory in Andover, this building system showcased efficiency and forward-thinking design. In this image, we witness a snapshot of carefree childhood amidst urban development. It serves as a reminder that even within bustling cityscapes like Greater London, spaces for play and imagination are essential for young minds to thrive. This photograph encapsulates both the architectural achievements of its time and the timeless essence of childhood innocence - forever frozen in history thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts.
