EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Allegory on the 100th anniversary of Dutch Freedom, which took place between 1648 and 1748. At its center, Peace personified floats gracefully in the air, holding an olive branch and a caduceus, symbolizing harmony and tranquility. Just below her, Minerva graciously accepts a lance with a freedom hat from a putto, signifying the transfer of power and liberty. In the middle ground stands Vigilance, who is presented with a book by another putto. This represents the importance of remaining watchful to protect one's freedoms. On the left side of this allegorical scene, yet another putto valiantly chases away a sea of flames with his spear, symbolizing victory over adversity. The underside showcases Amsterdam's City Hall on Dam Square as it appeared in 1648 when construction was completed. A portrait of Jacob van Campen adorns this architectural marvel while pile driving work during its creation is also depicted. Throughout this intricate engraving are various symbols representing peace (Pax), war (Mars/Ares), cupids (amores/amoretti/putti), alertness (Vigilance), guardia vigilanza vigilanza per difendersi & oppugnare altri (personification), as well as devil (s) and demons. Created by Simon Fokke in 1748 using paper engraving techniques, this remarkable artwork measures approximately 218 mm in
