EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pass card from the stunning coast of Norway in the Bergen area. The pass card, meticulously prepared and corrected to eliminate any errors, spans from Bommelsondt to the Wtweer Klippen. Its title on the object proudly proclaims its accuracy and attention to detail. The passport card itself is adorned with two compass roses, with the North elegantly positioned on the left side. In the bottom left corner, a beautifully designed cartouche features the publisher's title and address. Here, we see a woman wearing a city crown and holding a cornucopia, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. A sea god stands beside her, clutching stockfish and a water barrel. Adding an element of whimsy to this intricate artwork is a squirrel perched atop the cornucopia. On the bottom right corner of this pass card lies Neptune accompanied by two mermaids at scale. The scale displays measurements in German, Spanish, as well as English or French miles. Created by Jan Luyken in Amsterdam between 1681-1799 using paper engraving techniques, this piece measures approximately 511 mm in height and 569 mm in width. A true masterpiece capturing both artistic beauty and geographical precision; this pass card offers us glimpses into Norway's coastal wonders while showcasing remarkable craftsmanship from centuries past.
