Artaxerxes Persian Aisa Longimanus

EDITORS COMMENTS
Artaxerxes I Longimanus (465-424 BC): A Persian King's Reign of Peace and Prosperity This stunning painting depicts Artaxerxes I Longimanus, the third son of Xerxes I, who ascended the Persian throne in 465 BC at the age of 22. The name 'Longimanus' translates to 'the long-handed' in Latin, a reference to his physical attribute, which was said to be a sign of royalty and strength. Artaxerxes I's reign marked a period of peace and prosperity for the Persian Empire, following a series of tumultuous years. He successfully quelled rebellions in Egypt and Babylon, and maintained a peaceful relationship with the Greeks, allowing trade and cultural exchange to flourish. During his reign, Artaxerxes I undertook several building projects, including the construction of a new palace at Persepolis and the restoration of the royal road network. He also supported the arts and sciences, with scholars and artists from Greece and other parts of the empire coming to Persia to share their knowledge and expertise. This painting captures the regal presence of Artaxerxes I, dressed in the traditional Persian attire, with a crown adorned with precious gems and a scepter in his hand. The intricate details of his clothing, the rich colors, and the grandeur of the setting all serve to highlight the power and wealth of the Persian Empire during this time. Artaxerxes I's reign came to an end in 424 BC, when he was succeeded by his son Xerxes II. Despite his relatively short reign, Artaxerxes I left a lasting impact on Persian history, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in both Persian and Western literature and art.
