1865 Augusta Erskine Examining Fitzclarence Frederick Gordon Jordan Kennedy Portfolio

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Lady Augusta Gordon-Hallyburton (nee Fitzclarence), a woman of remarkable history and intrigue, in the prime of her life. Daughter of King William IV by his mistress, Mrs. Jordan, Augusta was born into a world of privilege and scandal. Her early years were marked by the tumultuous relationships of her parents, which would shape her own romantic life in profound ways. At the age of 17, Augusta married the Hon. James Kennedy-Erskine, with whom she had four children. However, their union was short-lived, as James died just six years later. In 1841, Augusta married again, this time to Lord John Frederick Gordon-Hallyburton, a man 20 years her junior. Their marriage was a source of controversy due to the significant age difference and the fact that Lord Hallyburton was still married to his first wife. Despite the scandal, Augusta and Lord Hallyburton remained together until his death in 1865. In this portrait, taken around that time, Lady Augusta is depicted in a thoughtful and introspective pose, examining a portfolio of papers or documents. The serious expression on her face suggests that she is deeply engaged in her work or contemplating the events of her past. Augusta's life was a testament to the complexities of 19th-century British society, where the lines between love, duty, and scandal were often blurred. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied convention and lived on her own terms, leaving a rich and intriguing legacy in the annals of history.
