1655 1728 Jurist Mania Opposed Philosopher Witchcraft

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, we see the prominent German jurist and philosopher, Christian Thomasius (1655-1728). Thomasius is considered a pivotal figure in the intellectual history of the Early Enlightenment, known for his groundbreaking contributions to the fields of law and philosophy. Born in Leipzig, Thomasius studied law at the University of Jena and later became a professor of law at the University of Halle. Thomasius is best known for his opposition to the widespread witchcraft mania that gripped Europe during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. At a time when fear and hysteria drove countless innocent people to be falsely accused, tried, and executed for witchcraft, Thomasius bravely spoke out against the irrationality and injustice of these accusations. He argued that the evidence used to convict witches was unreliable and that the entire concept of witchcraft was based on superstition and ignorance. Thomasius's influential work, "De Haeresibus Adeptis" (Concerning the Learned Heresies), published in 1694, was a scathing critique of the witch trials and a call for reason and rationality. His ideas helped to pave the way for the Enlightenment and the eventual decline of the witch trials in Europe. Despite facing opposition and even threats to his own safety, Thomasius remained steadfast in his convictions. His courage and intellectual rigor earned him a place in the annals of history as a champion of reason and a defender of the innocent. This portrait, taken in 1655, captures the intellectual intensity and unwavering determination of a man who dared to challenge the prevailing beliefs of his time.
