Divers underwater off the coast of Malta

Divers swimming underwater with a box connected to their research with an inflatable house which was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, in Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. It was equipped with lighting, telephone and immersion heaters with which the inhabitants could make hot drinks. It was constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology. It was 9ft long and 6ft wide, constructed from rubberised material on a steel frame, and weighed around 500 lb. The team leader was David Baume who hoped it would be the first of a series of low cost underwater living spaces from which scientists could explore the seas. David and some other team members were able to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. The following day a severe storm caused the house to collapse. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this underwater photograph from 1969, a team of intrepid divers, led by David Baume, explore the depths of Paradise Bay off the coast of Malta. Surrounded by bubbles from their oxygen tanks and equipped with a box-like underwater dwelling, the team members delve into the mysterious world beneath the waves. The innovative structure, anchored to the seabed some 50 feet deep, was a remarkable engineering feat of its time. Constructed by teams from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology, the 9ft long and 6ft wide underwater house was made from rubberised material on a steel frame, weighing approximately 500 lb. It was outfitted with essential amenities, including lighting, a telephone, and immersion heaters, enabling its inhabitants to make hot drinks. David and some of his team members braved the depths for an unprecedented overnight stay, marking the first of what was hoped to be a series of low-cost underwater living spaces for scientific exploration. However, the following day, a severe storm struck, causing the underwater house to collapse, marking a premature end to their groundbreaking expedition. The photograph captures the essence of the 1960s spirit of innovation and exploration, as these brave divers ventured into the unknown depths of the sea, armed with their diving gear, including flippers, oxygen canisters, and breathing apparatus. This image stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of those who dared to defy the boundaries of the known world and push the limits of human exploration.
