EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr. Theodora de Verdion, also known as Miss Grahn, was a remarkable and enigmatic figure of the late 19th century. Born a woman, she defied societal norms and conventions by living and working as a man. In this photograph, Dr. de Verdion, dressed in a tailored suit and wearing a stern expression, exudes an air of authority and intelligence. Born in Sweden in 1841, Theodora de Verdion, whose birth name is unknown, moved to London in her late twenties. She began her medical studies at University College London, but was denied admission due to her gender. Undeterred, she continued her education through self-study and apprenticeships with various doctors. In 1871, she was granted a license to practice medicine and became one of the first female doctors in England. To avoid the discrimination and prejudice that came with being a woman in a male-dominated profession, Dr. de Verdion chose to live and work as a man. She adopted the name Theodore de Verdion and wore men's clothing at all times. She built a successful medical practice, treating both men and women, and gained a reputation as a skilled and compassionate doctor. Despite her success, Dr. de Verdion's gender identity remained a closely guarded secret. She died in 1892, leaving behind a legacy as a trailblazer for women in medicine and a testament to the power of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. This photograph, taken during her later years, captures the intensity and focus of a woman who defied the expectations of her time and paved the way for future generations.
