1204 Aquitaine Eleanor Eleonore 1122 Guyenne

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print depicts Eleanor of Aquitaine, also known as Eleonore de Guyenne (1122?-1204), a figure of immense historical significance in European history. Born in the Duchy of Aquitaine, in southwestern France, Eleanor was one of the most powerful and influential women of the Middle Aages. She was the queen consort of two kings: Louis VII of France and Henry II of England. Eleanor's first marriage to Louis VII was brief and unhappy, and she was famously involved in an affair with Henry Plantagenet, the future Henry II of England. Their love story is the stuff of legend, and their union produced eight children, including the future King Richard the Lionheart and King John Lackland. Eleanor's second marriage to Henry II was much more successful, and she played a crucial role in the expansion of the Angevin Empire, which included large parts of modern-day France, England, and the Holy Land. Eleanor was a patron of the arts, a supporter of the Crusades, and a champion of women's rights. She was also a shrewd political strategist and a formidable ruler in her own right, ruling Aquitaine as a regent during Henry's absences. Despite her many accomplishments, Eleanor's life was not without controversy. She was imprisoned by her son, King Richard, for her role in supporting her eldest son, the future King John, against him. She spent the last years of her life under house arrest in various castles in England and France. This print captures the regal beauty and strength of Eleanor of Aquitaine, a woman who defied convention and left an indelible mark on European history. Her legacy continues to inspire artists, writers, and historians to this day.
