11th 1921 Criminal Equality Gender Jury L Aw Mixed Sworn January Jurors Rights

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the First Mixed Jury at the Central Criminal Court in England, taken on 11th January 1921. The Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey, is the principal criminal court in England and Wales, and the scene of many landmark trials throughout history. Up until this momentous day, juries in England and Wales were composed entirely of men. However, the Qualified Women's Property Act of 1882 and the Representation of the People Act of 1918 granted women the right to vote and stand for election, but it took another 13 years for women to be included as jurors. The image shows a diverse group of women and men, all dressed formally, waiting to be sworn in as jurors. The women, wearing hats and coats, sit alongside their male counterparts, demonstrating the newfound equality in the legal system. This photograph is a powerful symbol of progress towards gender equality in the law and a testament to the determination of women to have a voice and influence in the justice system. The introduction of women jurors brought about a shift in societal attitudes towards women's role in the legal system and paved the way for further advancements in women's rights. This photograph is an important reminder of the strides made towards gender equality and the ongoing efforts to ensure equal representation and opportunities for all.
