Born in New Hampshire in 1782, Dodge served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812, where he rose to the rank of major. After the war, he settled in the Wisconsin Territory, where he became a prominent figure in the region's political scene. Dodge's military experience proved invaluable during the Black Hawk War in 1832, where he led a successful campaign against the Sauk and Fox tribes. His leadership earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers and the Native American population, and he was later appointed as the Indian Agent for the region. In 1842, Dodge was elected as the fifth Governor of Wisconsin, serving for two terms until 1846. During his tenure, he worked to improve the state's infrastructure, including the construction of roads and schools. He also advocated for the rights of the state's Native American population and worked to establish peaceful relations between them and the settlers. After leaving office, Dodge continued to serve his community as a judge and a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. He passed away in 1867, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and a respected leader.
