Born in Paris on February 1, 1829, Brown was a prolific artist whose works spanned various genres, including history painting, portraiture, and landscape. Brown's artistic career began in the mid-19th century, a time of great change and innovation in the art world. He studied under renowned French painters such as Paul Delaroche and Thomas Couture, and his work was influenced by the Realist and Academic movements of the time. In this engraving, Brown is shown in formal attire, with a serious expression and a painter's palette and brushes at his side. The richly colored background features a landscape with rolling hills and a serene lake, reflecting the natural beauty that often inspired his work.
