EDITORS COMMENTS
Lady Cynthia Asquith, nee Charteris, is depicted in this photograph from January 1915. At the time, her husband, Lieutenant Herbert Asquith, had recently received a commission in the Royal Naval Division. Lady Cynthia's elegant and refined appearance exudes the grace and sophistication of the early 1910s. Born on March 24, 1887, Lady Cynthia was the daughter of the 12th Earl of Wemyss and March, and her marriage to Lieutenant Asquith, the son of the then British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, made her a prominent figure in British society. The couple's union was celebrated in the press, with headlines heralding the 'Royal Wedding of the Year.' As the wife of a high-ranking military officer and the daughter of a nobleman, Lady Cynthia was no stranger to the grandeur and pomp of the British aristocracy. However, her youthful and vibrant spirit shines through in this image, as she gazes off into the distance with a hint of a smile playing on her lips. Her simple yet elegant attire, consisting of a high-necked blouse and a flowing skirt, is a testament to the fashion trends of the era. With the First World War in full swing, Lady Cynthia's life was about to change dramatically. Her husband's military duties would take him away from home for extended periods, leaving her to manage their estate and raise their children. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, Lady Cynthia's resilience and grace continued to define her as a beloved and admired figure in British society.
