1755 1793 Antoinette Caused Marie Necklace Possibly Scandal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and opulence of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France during the reign of King Louis XVI (1774-1792). The image, dated between 1755 and 1793, showcases the queen wearing a magnificent diamond necklace, a gift from her husband, that would later become the center of a notorious scandal. Marie Antoinette, born in 1755 as the eldest daughter of the Habsburg Emperor Francis I, was married to Louis XVI in 1770 as part of an alliance between the Bourbon and Habsburg dynasties. Her extravagant lifestyle and spending, particularly on fashion and jewelry, fueled the growing discontent among the French people during a time of economic hardship. The diamond necklace, known as the "Collier de Perle," was a gift from King Louis XVI to his wife in 1785. However, it was later discovered that the jewels had been secretly sold to the queen by two jewelers, who then attempted to extort money from her by claiming that they had not been paid in full. The scandal, which came to be known as the Affaire du Collier, further tarnished the reputation of the already unpopular queen and added to the growing animosity towards the monarchy. Despite the controversy, this portrait remains a testament to the beauty and elegance of Marie Antoinette, a queen who was both admired and reviled during her time. The image serves as a reminder of the complexities and intrigues of the French monarchy and the tumultuous period leading up to the French Revolution.
