EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume, as worn by a proud representative of the MacCruimin clan. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 1," published in 1923, and offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Scotland's Highland clans. The MacCruimins, also known as the MacCrimmons, are an ancient Scottish sept, believed to have originated in the western Highlands. Their name is derived from the Gaelic "Mac an t-Sramaich," meaning "son of the beaker," likely referring to an early chieftain who was renowned for his hospitality. In this photograph, the MacCruimin wears the traditional Highland dress that was common amongst the clansmen of the Scottish Highlands during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The outfit consists of a kilt made from woolen tartan fabric, a white linen shirt, a waistcoat, a jumper or "fair isle" sweater, a belt or "sash," and a sporran, which hangs from the belt. The MacCruimin also wears a plaid, or "feileadh mór," which is draped over the left shoulder and pinned at the right shoulder. The plaid is a distinctive feature of Scottish Highland dress, and its pattern is unique to each clan. The MacCruimin completes his ensemble with a pair of ghillie brogues, traditional Scottish leather shoes with laces that are worn without socks. His bonnet, or "balmoral," is also made of tartan fabric and is adorned with a feather. The MacCruimin's face bears the expression of a proud and resilient people, who have preserved their unique customs and traditions despite the challenges of history. This photograph is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Scottish Highland clans and their rich cultural heritage. It offers a glimpse into the past, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the traditions of our ancestors.
