EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving, titled "Antelopes," is an exquisite illustration from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" or "Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History," published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The engraving showcases five distinct species of antelope: the Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) in the foreground, with its distinctive white markings on its rump and face; the Black Wildebeest or White-tailed Gnu (Connochaetes gnou) in the middle, easily identified by its long, white tail and black body; and the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) and two Bushbucks in the background. The scene is depicted with a sense of drama, as hunters are shown in the process of shooting two of the antelope. The intricate details of the animals' anatomy, their textured coats, and the lush vegetation in the background are all rendered with remarkable precision and artistry. The handcoloured technique adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning example of 19th-century zoological illustration. This engraving is not only a testament to the beauty and diversity of antelope species but also a glimpse into the natural history of the past.
