EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the renowned French opera singer, Simon Chenard (1758-1832), in the title role of Prince de Catane in the opera of the same name by Rene Richard Castel, based on Voltaire's play. The image, taken from the Almanach des Spectacles by K.Y.Z, published by Louis Janet in Paris in 1819, captures the intensity and drama of Chenard's performance at the Opera Comique in Paris during the year 1818. Born in Paris, Simon Chenard began his musical career as a choirboy at the Sainte-Chapelle before studying voice with the famous tenor, Jean-Baptiste-Sauveur Gervais. He made his operatic debut in 1781 as Oronte in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie. Throughout his illustrious career, Chenard performed in numerous productions at the Opera-Comique and the Opera-National, earning acclaim for his powerful voice and expressive acting. In the opera Prince de Catane, Chenard portrays the titular character, a Sicilian prince who disguises himself as a commoner to win the heart of the woman he loves. The production, based on Voltaire's play, was a popular success, and Chenard's performance as the Prince was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. This exquisite engraving offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century French opera, showcasing the elegance, artistry, and drama of the time. The intricate details of Chenard's costume, the ornate stage setting, and the expressive facial expressions of the performers all contribute to a captivating and immersive image that transports us back to the era of Voltaire and the Opera Comique.
