EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts Alfonso V of Aragon, also known as Alfonso the Magnanimous (1396-1458), the King of Aragon and Naples. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The print is based on an illustrated manuscript, numbered 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. Alfonso V is shown in full regalia, wearing the royal mantle and helmet adorned with the emblem of the Crown of Aragon. The helmet is surmounted by a dragon, a symbol of the House of Barcelona, from which Alfonso descended. The King is also depicted holding a scepter in his right hand and a globe in his left, signifying his power and dominion over his vast territories. Alfonso V was a significant figure in European history, known for his military conquests, patronage of the arts, and promotion of learning. He was a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive chivalric order founded by Philip III of Burgundy in 1430. The Order's emblem, a golden fleece, is depicted at the bottom of the print. This chromolithograph is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and vibrant colors that characterized the art of the late 19th century. It offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the European monarchies of the past and the rich history of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
