Le Chevalier Bayard, Pierre Terrail (1473-1524): A Portrait of Valor and Chivalry This hand-colored lithograph depicts Pierre Terrail, better known as Le Chevalier Bayard, a renowned French knight from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Bayard's striking appearance is captured in this ancient portrait, which has been preserved by the Terrail family and reproduced as part of the "Historical Costumes of France" series by Bibliophile Jacob, published in Paris in 1852. Bayard is shown wearing an impressive suit of armor, adorned with a distinctive red tonnelet, a large square pennon bearing the cross of St. George, which was the emblem of the Order of the Garter, to which Bayard belonged. The tonnelet was a symbol of his English connections and his allegiance to King Henry VII. In his right hand, Bayard holds a sword, a testament to his martial prowess.
