EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the elegance and charm of Margaret Whigham, a British society figure and debutante of the year in 1930. In the image, taken by the renowned photographer Madame Yevonde in 1931, Margaret is posed in profile against a dark background, her sophisticated features accentuated by the contrast. Two small, fluffy poodles, named Gabi and Suki, sit obediently at her feet, their eyes fixed on the camera with an air of regal composure that matches their mistress. At the time of this photograph, Margaret was still unmarried, but her life was soon to take a series of dramatic turns. In 1937, she married American golfer Charles Sweeny, and later, in 1949, she became the Duchess of Argyll following her marriage to the 10th Duke. However, her marriage to the Duke was marked by scandal and controversy, most notably the infamous "headless man" photographs that emerged during their divorce case in 1963. These photographs, which depicted the Duke in compromising situations with other women, plunged Margaret into disgrace and penury. Despite these challenges, the image of Margaret with her beloved poodles, Gabi and Suki, remains a testament to her grace and beauty in a bygone era.
