EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Amélie of Naples and Sicily, born Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies on November 26, 1782, was the wife of Louis Philippe I, King of the French, and the Reine des Francais (Queen of the French) from 1830 until his abdication in 1848. Daughter of Ferdinand III, King of the Two Sicilies, and his wife Maria Amalia of Austria, Marie Amélie was the sister of the future King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Marie Amélie in her regal attire as the Queen of France. The image is taken from the renowned collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph showcases Marie Amélie's elegant and refined appearance, with her elaborate headdress adorned with pearls and feathers, and her voluminous gown embroidered with intricate gold and silver thread. Marie Amélie's marriage to Louis Philippe I was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the French monarchy's ties with the House of Bourbon. The union was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, and Marie Amélie quickly became a beloved figure among the French people. She was known for her intelligence, grace, and charitable works, and her reign as Queen of France was marked by peace and prosperity. However, Marie Amélie's happiness was short-lived. Following the July Revolution of 1830, Louis Philippe I was forced to abdicate, and the couple was exiled from France. Marie Amélie spent the remainder of her life in England, where she passed away on March 24, 1866. This beautiful lithograph serves as a lasting testament to the beauty and elegance of Marie Amélie, the Queen of France, and the grace and dignity she brought to the French monarchy during her brief but memorable reign.
