EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts an Old Wife, Enoplosus armatus (Enoplossus armatus), a vibrant and intricately patterned fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean. The Old Wife, also known as the Three-spot Grunt or the Three-banded Grunt, is a popular species among marine hobbyists and ichthyologists for its striking appearance and unique characteristics. The Old Wife is a small, laterally compressed fish, growing up to 12 centimeters in length. Its body is covered in a dazzling array of colors, including blue, green, and yellow, with distinctive black spots and three horizontal stripes. The Old Wife's most notable feature, however, is its large, protruding mouth, which gives it its common name. This beautiful lithograph is from Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History, Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, published in Leipzig in 1840. Treitschke was a renowned German naturalist and publisher who dedicated his life to documenting and preserving the natural world. The Gallery of Natural History was a comprehensive collection of handcoloured lithographs of various animals, including fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles. The Old Wife in this print is depicted swimming gracefully in a clear, blue ocean, surrounded by other colorful marine life. The intricate details of its scales, fins, and gills are beautifully rendered, showcasing the skill and artistry of the lithographer. The Old Wife's expressive eyes and open mouth add a sense of life and movement to the image, making it a fascinating and captivating work of art and a valuable addition to any ichthyology collection.
