EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Flavius Julius Nepos, also known as Julius Nepos or Nepos, who reigned as the Western Roman Emperor from 474 to 480 AD. Nepos was the last Roman Emperor to rule the Western Roman Empire from Italy, marking the end of the ancient Roman Empire in the West. Born in Dalmatia, Nepos began his political career in the Eastern Roman Empire under Emperor Leo I. However, he was later exiled and eventually seized the Western Roman throne after the assassination of Emperor Glycerius. Nepos' reign was marked by his attempts to restore order and stability to the Western Roman Empire, which was plagued by barbarian invasions and political instability. This portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma in Utrecht, Netherlands, offers a glimpse into the regal image of Julius Nepos. The emperor is depicted wearing the imperial purple robe and diadem, symbolizing his authority and power. The portrait also includes the legend "Flavius Julius Nepos Augustus," emphasizing his imperial title. The influence of classical Roman art is evident in the portrait, with the emperor's pose and the use of Roman imperial iconography. The portrait serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural legacy of the Roman Empire, which continued to inspire artists and scholars long after its fall.
