Maurice was the son of Emperor Tiberius II and was appointed Caesar and later Augustus after his father's death. He was also known as "Mauritius" and "Divi Augusti Filius," meaning "son of the divine Augustus." The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving, is taken from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. The image shows Maurice in an oval frame, a common format for imperial portraits, with a serious expression and wearing the imperial diadem and a cloak draped over his shoulders.
