EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image, published in the Illustrated London News in December 1915, depicts the Turkish port of Smyrna (now Izmir) under heavy bombardment by the Allied Fleet during World War I. The port, located in the strategic region of the Eastern Mediterranean known as the Levant, was a crucial target in the Allied campaign to secure control of the sea routes and weaken the Ottoman Empire. The map inset on the bottom left corner of the photograph illustrates the strategic importance of Smyrna as a key port city, with its proximity to the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea. The Allied plan was to neutralize the Ottoman naval presence in the region and prevent the transport of supplies to the Central Powers. The bombardment marked a necessary incident in the main operation, which began on December 18, 1914, with the landing of British and French forces at Cape Helles and Suvla Bay. The bombardment of Smyrna was a prelude to the ground offensive that followed, which would ultimately result in the failure of the Allied attempt to seize Constantinople and the eventual withdrawal of the Allied forces in 1916. Despite the military setbacks, the bombardment of Smyrna had far-reaching consequences. It marked the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire and paved the way for the establishment of modern Turkey under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war on civilian populations and the long-lasting consequences of military conflicts.
