EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the aftermath of a tragic event that occurred on March 31, 1879, during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Forty-six men of the 10th Hussars, a British cavalry regiment, are seen drowned in the Kabul River after attempting to ford it. The Hussars, who were part of the British Indian Army, were on a mission to relieve the besieged British garrison at Kabul. The Kabul River, located in present-day Afghanistan, is known for its treacherous currents and unpredictable waters. On this fateful day, the soldiers, who were weighed down by their heavy equipment and armor, were swept away by the strong current as they tried to cross the river. The incident occurred near the village of Char Asiab, about 12 miles from Kabul. The photograph, taken shortly after the incident, shows the bodies of the soldiers lying in the shallow waters of the river. The scene is chaotic, with soldiers and locals trying to recover the bodies and provide assistance to the wounded. The tragedy resulted in a significant loss for the British forces and was a reminder of the dangers and challenges they faced during their campaigns in Afghanistan. The Second Anglo-Afghan War, which lasted from 1878 to 1880, was a conflict between the British Empire and Afghanistan over British influence in the region. The war resulted in the British occupation of Kabul and the establishment of a protectorate over Afghanistan, but it also came at a great cost to both sides. This photograph serves as a reminder of the human cost of war and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides.
