EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Westland-Sikorsky S-51 Mk. 1A, registration G-ALEG, takes center stage. This helicopter, the second Westland-built S-51, is showcased at the 1949 Farnborough SBAC show, with an array of distinctive modifications. Pest Control Ltd. had fitted the helicopter with spray bars, tanks, and a counter-balance, transforming it into an aerial pesticide application machine. The S-51 Mk. 1A, first flown on 19 December 1948, was initially kept by Westland for development flying. However, it was later sold to the Ministry of Supply on 9 November 1951, assuming the new designation Westland Dragonfly HC.2 WZ749. The helicopter was then sent to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) at Boscombe Down for evaluation. The S-51 Mk. 1A, a versatile and innovative helicopter, was a significant advancement in aviation technology during the late 1940s. Its acquisition by the Ministry of Supply marked an intriguing chapter in its history, as it was put to the test for potential military applications. Despite its brief tenure with the Ministry, this helicopter left a lasting impression on the aviation community, showcasing the potential of rotary-wing aircraft in various roles. This photograph not only captures the essence of aviation history but also highlights the ingenuity and adaptability of the Westland-Sikorsky S-51 Mk. 1A. Its presence at the 1949 Farnborough SBAC show served as a testament to the helicopter's versatility and its potential to revolutionize the way pest control was carried out in the post-war era.
