EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment during the coronation of King George V on the 22nd of June, 1911, at the Westminster Abbey in London. Seated majestically on the Coronation Chair, King George V is seen vested in the sacred robes of the Colobium Sindonis, a sleeveless vest, the Supertunica of cloth of gold, and the Girdle. The historical ceremony was about to reach its climax as the Dean of Westminster brought the spurs towards the monarch. The spurs, symbolic of knighthood and chivalry, were then presented to the Lord Great Chamberlain. In a traditional and ceremonial gesture, the Lord Chamberlain touched the King's heels with the spurs, marking the completion of the investiture and the formal recognition of King George V's sovereignty. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and symbolism of the British monarchy. The Coronation Chair, a significant piece of British history, has been used in every coronation since that of King Edward the Confessor in 1066. The ceremony itself, filled with ancient rituals and traditions, has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The coronation of King George V in 1911 marked the beginning of a new era for the British monarchy and served as a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions and history that continue to shape the institution today.
