EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from Fausto Veranzio's Machinae Novae, published in Venice in 1595, represents the earliest known illustration of a parachute in history. Veranzio, an engineer, architect, and cartographer, was a visionary innovator of his time, and his work showcased a wide range of inventions and mechanical wonders. The parachute, depicted in Plate 38 of Machinae Novae, is a testament to Veranzio's ingenuity and his fascination with the possibilities of human flight. The illustration displays a man standing at the edge of a cliff, holding onto a large, conical-shaped object with a series of fabric panels attached to its circumference. A rope is connected to the man's waist, and another one extends from the bottom of the parachute, anchoring it to the ground. The expression on the man's face suggests both excitement and trepidation as he prepares to jump. The parachute, although not yet in practical use, was an intriguing concept that had been theorized by Leonardo da Vinci and others before Veranzio. However, it was Veranzio who brought the idea to life in print, providing a visual representation of this extraordinary invention that would captivate the imagination of generations to come. This image not only serves as a historical record of the parachute's inception but also as a reminder of the boundless curiosity and creativity that drives human innovation. The parachute, which would later become an essential tool for aviation and survival, originated from the fertile mind of Fausto Veranzio and his groundbreaking work, Machinae Novae.
