Avro C30a Cierva

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Avro 671 Cierva C30A, a remarkable rotorcraft aircraft that defied the conventional wisdom of its time. Designed by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva and manufactured by the Avro Company in the United Kingdom during the late 1930s, the C30A was an advanced autogiro, a type of rotorcraft that features a free-spinning rotor. Unlike helicopters, which have a fully articulated rotor head, autogiros have a fixed rotor that spins only during takeoff and landing, providing lift while the aircraft moves forward in the air. This design innovation offered several advantages, including increased efficiency and reduced noise. The Avro 671 Cierva C30A was a versatile aircraft, capable of transporting up to five passengers or a payload of 1,000 pounds. Its sleek design, with a length of 31 feet and a wingspan of 38 feet, made it an impressive sight in the skies. Powered by a single de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, the C30A could reach a top speed of 105 miles per hour and had a range of approximately 400 miles. This photograph captures the Avro 671 Cierva C30A in flight, its rotor blades spinning gracefully above, while the cockpit and passenger cabin are bathed in sunlight. The image beautifully encapsulates the spirit of innovation and adventure that characterized the golden age of aviation. With its unique design and impressive capabilities, the Avro 671 Cierva C30A remains an enduring symbol of aviation history.
