Autogyro Capt Cierva Courtney Demonstration Farnborough From Hoare Juan Minister Pilot Samuel 1895 1936
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken at the Farnborough Airshow in 1936, Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva (1895-1936) is seen with Sir Samuel Hoare, the British Air Minister, and Captain F.F. Courtney, the pilot, following a successful demonstration of Cierva's autogyro aircraft. The autogyro, a precursor to the modern helicopter, was a revolutionary design that combined the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with the forward flight speed of an airplane. Cierva, an aeronautical engineer and inventor, is best known for his invention of the autogyro. He had been working on the design since the early 1920s and had made significant progress by the time of this demonstration. The autogyro uses an unpowered rotor to provide lift and a propeller for forward motion. This unique design offered the potential for a new type of aircraft that could take off and land vertically, making it an ideal solution for transport in congested urban areas. Sir Samuel Hoare, who served as the Air Minister from 1931 to 1935, was an important figure in the development of the British aviation industry. He was a strong advocate for the use of aviation for military purposes and played a key role in the expansion of the Royal Air Force. Captain F.F. Courtney, a skilled pilot, was the man at the controls during the demonstration. He had extensive experience flying various types of aircraft, including autogyros, and was an ideal choice to showcase the capabilities of Cierva's invention to the assembled crowd. The photograph captures a moment of excitement and innovation, as the potential of this new type of aircraft was demonstrated to the world. The trio stands in front of the autogyro, with the machine's distinctive rotor blades spinning in the background, a testament to the groundbreaking technology that was on display.
